So…Just What the Heck is Snoring, Anyway?

Technically, snoring is defined as any resonant noise from the respiratory tract that emerges during sleep.

Biologically, snoring refers to a vibration in the airway connecting the nose and the mouth; a vibration that can emerge through the mouth, the nose, or (as some non-snorers are painfully aware), it can emerge through both!

As you can sense, the more narrow the airway, generally speaking, the more intense the vibration; and ultimately, the louder the snore.

You may also be wondering why snoring only seems to emerge at night; after all, people literally use their airway every moment of their life; so why is snoring a nocturnal dilemma?

The answer to this is found in looking at the tissues within the airway. This tissue is very soft, and at night becomes relaxed; its similar to how some muscles, like biceps, become relaxed at night since the body does not require them.

As the throat (and its subsequent tissue) relaxes during sleep, the wind tunnel/airway becomes narrower and hence, snoring occurs.

Why Do Some People Snore Louder than Others?

This, too, is the reason why some people snore louder than others; and why the actual tone and pitch of one snorer may be rather different than another.

The actual snoring sound that emerges is dependant upon the force of wind that is being pushed through the (narrowed) airway. As you can envision, the more potent the force of wind (i.e. the faster the speed of the wind), the louder the snoring.

This is also why even babies can snore; but its often not considered snoring in the conventional sense, because an infants force of wind through their wind tunnel is so mild, that it can easily be ignored (though this can lead to complications; infant snoring can often be a symptom for a breathing and/or respiration problem, including allergy).

However, while snoring affects people of both genders and of all ages, it typically does afflict more men than women. There are a few reasons for this.

Snoring Tends to Favor Men

Overall, mens necks tend to be larger than womens necks; and thus there may be more fleshy tissue in there just waiting to combine with air flow and cause snoring.

Another reason is that women produce the hormone called Progesterone, which is considered by some medical experts to be an aid in reducing or preventing snoring. In fact, there are some anti-snoring treatments that involve Progesterone therapy for snoring men.
Factors that Increase and/or Lead to Snoring

There are several health and lifestyle factors that contribute to snoring; and this is true for both men and women, since snoring is a condition that does affect both genders (though surveys suggest that men snorers outnumber women snorers by a ratio of 2:1).

Some of the major health and lifestyle factors that can contribute to snoring include:

< Allergies, which can clog the airway and trachea

< Allergy medications, which can dry the nasal cavities

< Cold and Flu, which can similarly clog the airway (this is why some people experience snoring only when theyre suffering a cold or flu)

< Thickened tissues in the nasal passages, which can sometimes result from some surgeries unrelated to snoring

< Overuse of nasal sprays which irritate the nasal passageway

< Enlarged adenoids and/or tonsils

< Goiter (swelling of the an ineffective thyroid gland in the neck)

< A disproportionately large tongue that blocks airflow

< Ineffective regulation and neural control of mucus membranes

< Obesity and excess weight (leading to an enlarged neck and excess soft tissue in the trachea)*

< Excess gut/belly (relatively decreasing the size of the lungs)*

< Drinking alcohol**, which:

o sedates the throat muscles and causes them to collapse
o dilates blood vessels which swells up throat tissue

< Cigarette smoking, which inflames the upper airway

< The normal aging process, which can simply lead to a loss of muscle tone in the neck and thus snoring

* Since relatively more men tend to experience an excess gut, this is one reason why more men tend to experience snoring than women.

** Any medication (prescribed, over the counter, or illicit) that leads to excessive relaxation can lead to snoring.

So while we’ve looked at what snoring is, and what (rather common) factors and variables lead to/increase snoring, there still remains a very important element to focus upon: just how devastating is snoring? I answer this rather ominous question in my next article.

To begin with, on April 19, 1995, a homemade bomb blew up in the Alfred P. Murrah Federal building in Oklahoma City. The bomb killed 168 people - build-employers, people who had come for services offered in the building, and 19 children under the age of five who were in the day-care center on the building’s second floor. The event shocked the entire country, devastated Oklahoma City, and shattered the lives of the families of those who were killed.

After an exhaustive search, the FBI identified Timothy McVeigh as the man who made the bomb, drove the van carrying the bomb, and set the bomb to explode soon after the building had opened for business for the day. His motive was anger at the government and a distrust of justice. He did not know nor did he have any personal arguments with any of the victims who died in the blast.

In June, 1997 a jury in Denver found McVeigh guilty of committing the crimes. During the sentencing phase of the trial, many family members of those killed were allowed to testify. All were angry and deeply hurt. Many wanted McVeigh to die. But a significant minority thought that he should be allowed to live.

The testimonies of the victims’ relatives were published. Here are two different views of persons who lost loved ones.

“… There was nothing arbitrary about McVeigh’s conscious decision to do what he did. He chose to park the truck, put in his earplugs and walk off. When he did that, he took away the rights of 168 people to ever make decisions of their own again. My brother and the others can’t elect to work, or play, or spend time with their families. So I don’t want McVeigh to have the freedom to even get a drink of water in his cell. If those 168 victims cannot make the most basic of chooses, why should he? McVeigh has to pay for the choice he made on April, 19, 1995 - and he has to pay with his life.”

“Most people believe Timothy McVeigh should be put to death. I certainly understand their anger: my daughter Julie, a Spanish-language translator who worked for the Social Security Administration at the Murrah buildings, lost her life in the bombing. I am filled with rage at McVeigh. But I don’t think he should be executed… Lock him up for good, with no chance to get out. Is that punishment enough? The part of me that is still screaming ‘kill him’ does not think so. Nevertheless, my Catholicism teaches that even he has a soul, we must at least try to save him - and even try to forgive him. I am still too angry to deal with that now. But I’ll have to be forgiving if I am to have peace. That would be harder if he is executed. I don’t want McVeigh’s death on my head…”

One week after testimonies were published, McVeigh was sentenced to die by lethal injection.

The question of dual nature of justice is sure to be illustrated by the story of this crime. There is a mass murderer and the society as a representative of victims. The murderer has his personal vision of justice. So the suffered people do.

Everybody looks for righteousness in his or her life. All of them are sure to have their own vision of justice. However, sometimes their standpoints are deeply different. And here is the problem of misunderstanding in the society. People are still building the Babylon tower and speaking different languages: somebody finds the world to be beautiful and somebody thinks that it is wrong, full of hate and injustice. Therefore, the main matter for such persons is to change and modify it globally. Not for better, unfortunately. They are ready to ruin, kill, and make others suffer greatly. They name themselves “missionaries of integrity”, “judges”, “Messiahs”. They are cruel and angry with the government, officers and just people. They want the world to repay for their unluckiness, loneliness, nothingness. That’s why they commit awful crimes, trying to make people to be afraid of life.

Timothy McVeigh felt the injustice. He wanted to be great, famous. He wanted to feel the power. But he was too week to be noticed. And he decided to lead a Judge. So he made a bomb and shattered 168 worlds. This blast didn’t kill his own fear and disappointment; it destroyed numerous hopes for future. The mass-murderer realized his own unmoral dream of justice. He passed the Rubicon of humanity, he committed the crime.

The way to get rid of the same crimes, to save our world from the darkness of terrorism, violence and cruelty is the administrative judgment.

What do people mean saying “justice”, “judgment”, “judicature”, “a judge”? Of course, they use these words to name one of the most conventional standpoints, based in our mind genetically, and formed millions years ago. Society is always waiting for punishing the “rule-breaker”. That is a way to prevent the other members repeat the mistake. That’s a historical form of justice.

Much time has past. The world has changed, but people are the same. Their methods of solution the main problems are the same too. We still differentiate good and evil, fight with evil. Moreover, if we are still able to undertake steps to save our society, we will keep it protected.
To finish with I can’t but say that we all are the guardians of our future. If we remember it, our life will get the sense and hope for better.

I would like to talk about one of my many obsessions: learning Spanish. I have been thinking about this lately mostly because I am under the impression that, though I’ve lived in Mexico for two years, my Spanish sucks in a major way.

Both Mexicans and Gringos tell me that my Spanish is good and that I speak like a native. Ha! Little do they know the truth.

I can say almost anything I need to in most situations. I can go to our general practitioner, Doctora Bello, and tell her what ails me. And, because she will consciously speak to me slowly, like speaking to a two-year-old child, I can understand her instructions on how to cure the third eye that grew in the middle of my forehead overnight.

My problem with Spanish is that, though I can ask or say almost anything, when a native speaker talks back to me, all I hear is something like the sound a machine gun when it goes off. I hear sounds but nothing that sounds like human speech. I can hear the rhythm but it is unintelligible most of the time.

This can be embarrassing, to say the least. Can you imagine how I function as an expat in this society? Here is the real kicker: My wife, who has trouble with accent and vocabulary, can understand the machine gun Spanish. It is amazing! I am so jealous! She understands far more than I can possibly hope to. I haven’t the foggiest notion how she does it. I study day and night and memorize thousands of Spanish words. She doesn’t and her fluency outshines mine any time of the day.

What is the deal here?

I’ve found that I am not alone. Many “older” expats in Mexico have the very same struggle. Though they’ve studied their hearts out, it is the “listening and comprehending” part of the language that is giving them the most fits.

The first discovery I made is there are some presuppositions that we “older” learners need to dump and dump quickly.

there is no decline in the ability to learn as people get older;

except for minor considerations such as hearing and vision loss, the age of the adult learner is not a major factor in language acquisition;

the context in which adults learn is the major influence on their ability to acquire the new language. [1]

Older foreign language learners can be excellent students in gaining a second language. It is a senseless stereotype that they cannot learn a foreign language. The difficulties in an older person learning a foreign language can be overcome in adjusting the learning environment and by choosing the right methodology.

The biggest obstacle in learning a second language for an older student is an emotional onedoubt. Doubt in the mind of the student is what convinces an older language learner that he or she cannot learn a foreign language and learn it well. Motivation, what I’ve written in earlier columns, can affect the entire outcome of language learning.

In a study done in 1979, researchers Krashen, Long and Scarcella discovered,
“Studies comparing the rate of second language acquisition in children and adults have shown that although children may have an advantage in achieving native-like fluency in the long run, adults actually learn languages more quickly than children in the early stages.” [2]

A study in 1981 by Ostwald and Williams revealed, “Studies on aging have demonstrated that learning ability does not decline with age. If older people remain healthy, their intellectual abilities and skills do not decline (Ostwald and Williams, 1981). Adults learn differently from children, but no age-related differences in learning ability have been demonstrated for adults of different ages. [3]

“More recent research in neurology has demonstrated that, while language learning is different in childhood and adulthood because of developmental differences in the brain, “in important respects adults have superior language learning capabilities” (Walsh and Diller, 1978).” [4]

Conclusion: I am without excuse. I have to stay in there swinging the linguistic bat until I hit that home run.
