Finding and Catching Fish has Never Been Easier With the Garmin 250 Fish Finder Friday, Oct 31 2008

The Garmin Fishfinder 250 is Garmin’s latest addition to their family of marine chartplotters, handheld GPS, fish finders and GPS sounders and its already gaining a great reputation amongst the angling community.

We met up with Johnathan W Ross, a surgeon and keen fisherman to find out his views on the new Garmin 250.

FFR - How long have you had the Garmin 250?

JWR - I purchased the 250 fish finder as a replacement for my obselete Garmin 160 fish finder. I have had the 250 for six months and I’m more than pleased with it.

FFR - How do you find the display compared to the Garmin 160?

JWR - The display on the Garmin 250 is much more detailed than the 160. It has twice the definition of the older model which means that what you see on the screen is in great detail. Something called Depth Control Gain gives really detailed images.

FFR - Do you fish different types of water?

JWR - I fish in both fresh water and salt water, and the Garmin 250 works well in both situations.

FFR - Did you notice better performance in shallower waters?

JWR - I have the version with dual-frequency sonar which is made for deeper waters, to a depth of 1500′. There is a version of the Garmin 250 with single-frequency which will be better for shallow waters, and its cheaper too!

FFR - Have you customized your 250 fish finder?

JWR - I have connected a Garmin GPS receiver (which I bought separately) to the unit. I can now mark waypoints directly from the Fishfinder’s keypad.

FFR - So is the 250 a fish finder that is easy to use?

JWR - Very easy. It works out of the box, so no complicated set-up. It’s very slim so it doesn’t get in the way when its mounted - I’ve got mine on the bow. Its mounted on a swivel so that it can be viewed from any angle. The buttons are easy to use, too, even with gloves on.

NS Kennedy is a keen outdoor sportsman - particularly hunting and fishing - and loves to find out about new gadgets and gizmos that he can use. He started his site Garmin GPS Navigation Reviews http://www.garmin-gps-navigation.com to share his tips and findings with other sportsmen.

Designing the “Perfect” Workout Program Thursday, Oct 30 2008

Lucky for you, a seven day week is ideal for designing the perfect workout program. Evidence suggests that a seven day training cycle is almost perfect for if you want to build muscle fast. It provides just enough variety to keep the gains coming thick and fast.

You see, the human body is quick to adapt to any sort of exercise. Once it has made the necessary increases in muscle size, no amount of exercise at the same level of intensity will produce any further muscle growth. However, it will help to maintain your current levels of muscle mass.

If you want to make continual gains though, it is important to provide some sort of regular variation in your training. But I’m not talking about your exercises here. No Sir. The perfect program, is guaranteed to produce fast muscle gains for your entire life. Without any need for a change in the actual exercises used.

However, to prevent the need for regular changes in your choice of exercises, a technique called “double progressive” training will be used. As well as using this technique, you will be providing extra variety by using a two or three day per week training schedule. Combined, they will provide more than enough variety to guarantee regular muscle gains.

The “double progressive” technique is the secret key behind all successful bodybuilding programs. If used correctly, no two workouts should ever be the same. This technique makes sure that you either, perform more repetitions with the same weight, or you use extra, additional weight on one, or all of your exercises.

Personal debt problems - here are some solutions Thursday, Oct 30 2008

Personal debt problems - here are some solutions

We’re going to take a look at just four debt solutions: debt management plans; debt consolidation loans; IVAs (Individual Voluntary Arrangements) and Trust Deeds. To some people, they’re simply names - but to others, they’re a path back to financial independence. So how do these debt solutions work? What’s the difference between them? Perhaps most important: which option could be right for me?

Basically, debt management means liasing with your creditors, asking them to agree to some changes to the original repayment terms. It’s easy for your situation to change in ways that mean you simply can’t keep up with payments as originally accepted. You may have lost your job, had a baby, or witnessed your mortgage payments shoot up. Or maybe your debts just got out of hand.

However it happened, it’s in your creditors’ interest (as well as your own) to find a realistic way for you to repay your debts, and a professional debt management organisation can help make that happen. They can contact your creditors on your behalf, asking them to consider things like accepting lower payments, freezing interest and waiving charges. So debt management might mean your creditors take longer to repay (because you’re repaying it more slowly), but it can keep it from escalating out of control.

Rather than struggling to keep up multiple payments to multiple debts, some people decide to consolidate their debts - taking out a debt consolidation loan that’s big enough to pay all their smaller debts off. This means they’ll only have one payment to make per month, thus reducing the risk of missing payments (and the charges and damage to their credit rating that can result).

Plus, a debt consolidation loan can come with a lower interest rate than unsecured loans. It can also give the individual the opportunity to think about their financial circumstances and arrange to repay the loan at a rate they can afford - again, repaying a debt more slowly will mean it takes longer to pay off and can end up costing more, so it’s vital to weigh up the pros and cons before proceeding.

A form of insolvency, an Individual Voluntary Arrangement is a legally binding agreement between a debtor and their creditors. If you owe around £15,000 or more to more than two unsecured creditors, an IP can tell you whether an IVA might be the best way for you to get out of debt. If they think it is, they can draft up proposal, detailing how much you can afford to pay towards your debts every month for the next (normally) five years, once you’ve taken your essential expenses into account.

A Trust Deed is similar to an IVA, but only available to residents of Scotland. In most cases, a Protected Trust Deed will last for three years.

Caring for Your Inflatable Boat - Common Sense & Consistency Are the Keys Thursday, Oct 30 2008

Thousands of years ago, the first inflatable boats, made from animal skins, were used for transportation. People used them to cross rivers, ferry goods to other locations, and move military troops. Over time, inflatable boats were adapted for recreational use as well, and for rescue operations. Today there are many types of inflatable boats and over a dozen ways they are used around the world.

Different militaries across the globe helped bring inflatable boats to the public attention, and today the government still uses inflatable boats for troop transport, special military operations, and drug and other law enforcement activities. In addition, inflatable boats are also used in search and rescue operations, fisheries patrol and security patrol. They are also used as tenders on large yachts and ships.

On the recreational side, inflatable boats can be used for diving, fishing, pleasure boating, river rafting, water skiing, and many other water activities that involve a boat. Consumers can also purchase inflatable kayaks, canoes, and sailboats.

Because there are so many different types of inflatable boats and a variety of ways they can be used, it is important to be familiar with the specific operating instructions for your particular model and situation. However, there are a few general use guidelines that apply to most, if not all, inflatable boats.

Inflating

• When inflating your raft or boat, many manufacturers recommend filling each air chamber in a clockwise pattern around the boat, just until the craft takes shape. Then work your way back around the boat filling the chambers to the pressure level indicated for that particular boat.

• If the floor of the boat is inflatable, add air until the pressure relief valve releases a small amount of air.

• Don’t overfill. A properly inflated boat should have just a bit of give.

• Be aware that air temperature causes changes in the air pressure in the inflatable chambers. Many boaters fill their inflatable boats in the morning when the air is cool. But as the temperature increases over the course of the day, the air in the tubes expands, increasing the pressure. If a tube or chamber becomes too pressurized, it can explode if struck by a sharp object. You may have to let some air out at different points throughout the day if you operate your inflatable boat or inflatable kayak in the hot sun.

• Most inflatable boats deflate simply by opening the air valves.

Standard Precautions

• Because punctures are the main concern with inflatable boats, it is important to protect if from sharp objects. Use care when transporting diving knives, spears, fishing hooks, and other objects that could puncture the skin of the inflatable boat. Watch for barnacles and sharp metal or wood when tying your boat to the dock, and avoid dragging the boat over rocks and shells when landing on a beach.

• Even dull objects such as oars, ropes, or coolers can cause abrasion and deterioration of the coating material if allowed to rub for an extended period of time.

• It also is important to rinse out your inflatable boat or inflatable kayak after each use. Sand and gravel can cause abrasion and plug air valves. If left to soak into an inflatable boat, salt water can cause the material to deteriorate.

Caring For Your Inflatable Boat

Cleaning: Armorall and other oil-based products can damage the rubber or fabric over time and prevent patches from sticking. Mild dish soap is best for cleaning your inflatable boat. There are also several cleaners designed specifically for inflatable boats.

Storage: Because uninflated boats are more vulnerable to damage, many manufacturers recommend that you store the boat partially inflated and covered with a tarp. If this is not possible, completely deflate the boat and be sure it is dry and clean before rolling and storing in the carrying bag. If you plan to store your inflatable boat on a trailer, be sure there are no bends or kinks in the boat.

Repairs: Sometimes, even with the best of care and safety precautions, your inflatable boat can develop a puncture or leak. Unless you have a major and obvious accident, it may be difficult to determine the location of the leak. While the boat is inflated, wipe it with soapy water and watch for bubbles to form on the surface of the boat as a result of escaping air. Don’t assume there is only one leak. Check the entire boat with soapy water to be sure before setting out on the water.

Many manufacturers recommend that you bring your boat to a professional for larger repairs, because it can be difficult to get a good seal with a patch. However, if you have a small puncture or are in a situation where you need to make immediate repairs, follow the directions on the patch kit. Some basic tips include:

-Ensure that the surface is clean and dry before applying the patch
-Be sure the adhesive is sufficiently tacky before applying the patch
-Choose a patch that extends at least three inches beyond the rip in all directions

If your inflatable boat has rough or cracked areas that are filled with tiny pinhole leaks, this is an indication that the coating on the material has aged or become damaged by sunlight, saltwater, overheating or some other type of wear and tear. While you may be able to patch some of these leaks, it is best to replace the inflatable boat if other areas show signs of wear.

Inflatable boats, canoes, and kayaks have many advantages over traditional watercraft, however, because of their special design and materials, they can require more care and maintenance. But as this article describes, it is not difficult to care for an inflatable boat, and most problems can be avoided by using common sense and by developing a consistent routine. If properly cared for, inflatable boats can provide you with years of service and recreational fun without the expense associated with traditional watercraft.

Update Alaska: News From The Front Thursday, Oct 30 2008

Stopped into The Fishin’ Hole the other day, which happens to be one of my favorite fishing tackle/outfitter/sandwich shops. (Talk about your one stop shopping!!)

I was looking for a good 8 weight line to take to Alaska.

What I came away with was an update from about four different people who had just returned from Alaska.

Now, for those of you that have been following my upcoming maiden trip to The Last Frontier -you know that I am headed up there in a week from now. So it was nice to hear some first hand reports on what is going on, and how the fishing is doing.

Of course I am a little concerned that right there in the tiny town of Shady Cove, Oregon–there were four people who have recently been to Alaska right there at that given moment in that fishing tackle/outfitter/sandwich shop! If you take the ratio of those four people at that given time and the odds that they had been to Alaska and multply that out over the entire nation…. well….. you come up with a pretty dang high number!

And to think I was worried about the mosquitoes.

Anyway, one fella happened to have a photo album and all I had to say was that I was headed up to Alaska–and of course he pulled out that album and showed me some rather dandy Halibut that weighed in at 178 pounds. He also said if he didn’t have one of those belts that you strap on to fight Marlin, he would probably be recovering from hernia surgery. I of course said the fish was nice– but I was more concerned with the mosquitoes.

He told me they didn’t bother him.Hmmmm now that sounds fishy to me.

Another person reported that the Kenai–the LOWLY Kenai— fished well and they caught some really nice King Salmon. They weren’t bragging about size so they were either really big or really small.

Not sure.

They also went Halibut fishing and caught some 20 pounders, certainly not big by Alaskan standards. They also reported that every person on the boat puked their guts out.

Now there is something to look forward to. I hope I am fishing out of a Princess Cruiseliner–but I doubt it.

I also asked them how the mosquitoes were?

To quote them: ” OH MY GOD- THEY WERE BIG AS BIRDS!!”

Nice. Puking, scratching, and hernia surgery!!

We discussed the various options of Deet and netting, but it sounded like that only made it more challenging for the skeeters to find a way to make your life miserable. They described the mosquitoes approaching, ‘like a black cloud’ and then enveloping them in a blood sucking frenzy.

Sounds like a Stephen King novel.

One gal produced a bottle of some ” natural” deet free repellant, and offered up a very weak, “our friends used this up at Diamond Lake last week and said this stuff is ‘the bomb’.”

Unless she meant “bug bomb”–I wasn’t about to start experimenting with anything unproven. Besides, the difference between Diamond Lake mosquitoes and the Kenai Peninsula mosquitoes is probably like the difference between Peoria and Yankee Stadium. I told her I’d try it but I would need her cell number so I could be sure to call her at midnight if her”natural” spray was ineffective.

She pulled that bottle off the counter faster than a Ford truck recall goes out.

So it sounded like fishing was going about as expected, and the mosquitoes were going as expected also.

I also received a call from another buddy who wanted to go fishing on the Klamath River, in California, the week after I get back. He is an Alaskan fishing veteran so he had all sorts of good information to offer up about catching Silvers, including a “special” fly pattern that he developed and ties himself. I am now going to be his official “field tester” –because I suspect he thinks- if I can catch a fish with it…then it has real marketing potential. So look for it’s appearance on the “two guys with flys” website if it works. If not… well… you can always look for my swollen festering mosquito welts.

I have also checked in with my good friend Tom, who if you remember, floated the Kisaralik River last month. He is back and reported a successful trip, in the respect that no one was eaten by a Bear, and they returned with same number of people they left with.

Oh, and the fishing was great for BIG TROUT, and of course–Deet had little or no effect at stopping the onslaught of mosquitoes. As evidenced by his scabbed over arm full of bites and “Calamine lotioned” skin color.

Also received a phone call from Ranger Kurt–and he pretty much just laughed maniacally and kept saying things like: “August in Alaska” “August in Alaska” “HA HA HA ha…….”

Perhaps a few to many bites from his last trip??

Well, that is about it from the front.

I’ll be busy this week getting ready-and soaking my clothes in Deet…

Fishing Game: Nature’s Playground Tuesday, Oct 28 2008

If all men measured up to the standards of true sportsmanship, there would be no need for game, fish, and forestry laws. Neither would there be so much need for the laws that regulate human affairs in general.

But, in the fishing game, it is the true sportsman, with a love for the great outdoors, a wholesome respect for the welfare of others, and consideration for living and growing things, who sets the good examples for the youth to follow.

In reality, fishing games differ a lot from the other types of games that man has come to know. A fishing game is not a mere reflection of the activity itself but more of the love for fishing.

In fishing games, the angler does not go hunting or fishing only to gain the privilege of boasting over slaughter or material gain. He loves the lightning-like flash of the trout, the leap of the bass or muskie, the tug on the line, the whir of the reel, the thrill of battle with some “denizens” of the deep, and the companionship of other true sportsmen.

The Concept of Fishing Games

The most common type of fishing game is known as the “offshore game fishing.” In this type of game fishing, the anglers aim for the big lean fishes like the marlins and the tunas and the fishing is done in the sea.

Offshore game fishing is usually conducted as one type of recreational activity. Though, there are instances wherein this type of fishing game is also employed in competitions like the sports fishing.

Because of the energy being utilized in this type of recreational activity, offshore game fishing usually requires the biggest fishing boats. These fishing boats generally range from 30 to 50 feet in length.

The object of the game is to reel the fish in once it is properly hooked on the line. This can be a daunting task since the fish, especially if it is a big one, will have the tendency to pull away from the boat. The challenge is to reel the fish in while keeping the fishing line maintained on its specified tension.

The fishing game is not more of a competition for a true angler. Whenever they are doing this kind of activity as part of the game, what the angler really wants is to get in touch with nature, to breathe the clean, pure air, and muse in solitude in the wilds of nature’s playground.

Hence, in fishing games like offshore game fishing, the anglers like to play the game in strict accordance with the rules of reason and fairness at the same time conserve the value of fishes in the community.
