Art of Essay Writing Friday, Jan 30 2009

I love essays! I enjoy reading them, checking them, teaching my students how to generate them, but most of all I enjoy writing them! You want to ask why. I hope after reading my article you will understand. And I so much believe that you will also fall in love with the incredible world of essays. Let’s start our trip from a short background. The word “essay” originated from French word “essai” which means “attempt, effort, sketch”. And this translation reflects the essence of the task you are assigned at your college. Really, it is your personal attempt to give a challenging sketch on some engrossing issue. Unlike other academic assignments, essay suggests freedom of your creative work. Its main advantage is that you can write it on any topic, in any style. Essay is your own point of view on something you have heard, read, seen etc. The forefront of the essay is your personality, your thoughts, feelings and your life position. You have a unique chance to enter a reasonable controversy with other authors, as the teacher expects you to show your erudition in the subject. However, you should remember that regardless freedom of the writing process, it is not that easy at all. Because you are expected to find an original and capturing idea (even in the traditional context) and exceptional opinion on some problem.

The title of essay does not strictly depend on the essay topic: the title can also serve as a starting point in your reflection; it can express the relation of the whole and the parts. A free composition of essay is subject to its inner logic, it is an emphasized position of the author.

The style of the essay is marked by its aphoristic, paradoxical and figurative character. To convey your personal perception of the world you should: employ a lot of capturing examples, draw parallels, choose analogies, use various associations. One of the characteristic features of essay is the wide usage of numerous expressive means, such as metaphors, parable and allegoric figures, symbols and comparisons. Your can enrich and make your essay more interesting if you include in it: unpredictable conclusions, unexpected turning points, interesting clutches of events.Essay presents a dynamic interchange of author’s arguments, supporting evidence and questions.

Be brief, but at the same time avoid absolute simplicity. No one will like reading a monotonous narration. Completing the draft of your essay, read it aloud, yes, aloud. You will be struck by the number of rough details in your essay. You should get rid of them with no regret. If you have to say something new, original and exclusive, then the genre of essay is your genre. Be creative, free your mind and may be you will reveal a great essayist in yourself.

Origin Of Fly Fishing Friday, Jan 30 2009

Fishing. Take a rod and a line and throw it in some water. Splash it around a bit and wait until something tugs. If only it were that easy. The truth is, fishing as a sport is not as easy as most people think and is a lot more complicated than just throwing your line is some water. For starters there are several types of fishing depending on what kind of fish you want to catch.

In this article we’re going to focus on fly fishing and it’s origin.

Fly fishing goes all the way back to around 200 AD. The first reference to it was written by Aelian who was born around 170 AD. Early in his life he knew nothing of the sea. In his early writing “On The Nature Of Animals” he writes about a certain way of catching fish supposedly invented by the Macedonians. A particular fish that runs through the Astraeus River in Macedonia happens to feed on flies that are peculiar to that region. These flies are not found anywhere else. The natives of the land called this species of fly Hippouros. These flies seek their food over the river and are never very far away from the fish in the river below. Because of this it is relatively easy for the fish to jump out of the water, catching the flies in their mouths and eating them.

It is from seeing this that the Macedonian’s got the idea to use these flies to catch the fish. However, because it is unclean for their people to touch this species of fly they had to develop a way to catch the fish without actually handling the flies. So what they did was fasten red wool around a hook. They then fixed onto the wool two feathers which grow under a cock’s wattles. The rod they used was six feet long and the line was also the same length. They then threw the line in the direction of the flies. The fish seeing this line which is disguised to look like the fly think they are going to have a nice meal and instead are caught by the fisherman’s trap. Fly fishing was developed.

It should be pointed out that according to accounts of what the fly looked like and what the actual “bait” looked like it would seem that the Macedonians didn’t try to imitate the fly exactly, as the fly color was yellow and the bait color was red. Some speculation is that the fly changed color when near water but this was never proven.

For those interested, the story above was taken from Radcliffe’s “Fishing From The Earliest Times,” which was published in 1921. This version of the story is the one most often printed with no credit given to the original author. Radcliffe himself states that he adapted this translation from “Lambert’s Angling Literature in England” first published in 1881. Prior to this there was a Latin translation which was printed in 1558. This printing however wasn’t discovered until 1834.

In a later article we’ll cover modern day fly fishing.

Types of Water for the Aerogarden Thursday, Jan 29 2009

Hard water has a high dissolved magnesium and calcium content, and is the water delivered to taps in London. This water can cause excessive build up of limescale or mineral deposits that could damage the pump. Home water filters are designed to remove all contaminants such as organic solvents and chlorine taste. Distillers remove any minerals by heating, vaporising and recondensing water leave the mineral deposits behind. Pure distilled water works well in the AeroGarden http://www.aerogarden.org.uk/aerogardenpricing2.html provided it is within normal pH range. The easiest alternative is probably to use inexpensive bottled (not spring) water instead. This has a low mineral content and is available at most supermarkets. Cleaning out the aerogarden between planting different seeds and can help reduce mineral deposit build up and the damage it can cause -mainly to the aerogarden pump. The water used within http://www.aerogarden.org.uk/aerogarden_extra_nutrient_tablets.html gardening really needs to fall within a certain range of pH and certain dissolved mineral content. Most tap water supplies are treated so that they fall within this particular pH range and this works really well with the AeroGarden. However, most softened, or very “hard” waters or even spring water has high dissolved mineral content that can cause issues when used with in an AeroGarden. High dissolved mineral content or strong pH can get in the way with the proper uptake of the AeroGarden pH-buffer/nutrient tablet by the herbs or plants, this can stop or delay seed germination, cause “chlorosis”, or yellowing of the leaves and even severely stunt growth. This could be a problem for aerogardeners using tap water from a “hard” tap water area.

Popular Culture and Poker Wednesday, Jan 28 2009

The advent of Internet poker has brought the game from the inside the smoky back room to beneath the hot lights and cameras of television. A game once notorious only for degenerates and hustlers has now become a past time embraced by the masses on a level never seen before. Poker has diffused across race, gender and class lines, can be perceived as a game that brings people together in a time when the world seems to be getting more separated on a daily basis. Examining the pop culture phenomenon poker has become reveals what the casual player thinks of the game, and how popularity has changed the environment at the tables.

Obviously, the biggest influence on the popularization of poker was the 2003 World Series of Poker tournament and the victory of everyday man Chris Moneymaker. Winning his way in through a satellite tournament allowed Moneymaker to parlay a $40 investment and a very marketable last name into $2.5 million and a career as a spokesperson and figurehead for the game. The introduction of the hole card camera on ESPN’s telecasts of the World Series Tournaments allowed novice players to learn very basic strategy and become fascinated with the game while relaxing at home in front of their television.

Many famous musicians, actors, athletes, and even politicians have endorsed poker, legitimizing it in the eyes of many common citizens. American president-elect Barack Obama is known to be an avid card player. Athletes like boxer Evander Holyfield, baseball player David Wells, and Olympic gold medalist Michael Phelps have all played in World Series events. They cite that competition in poker releases a similar adrenaline rush as in their respective sports. The visibility brought forth by the name association with famous members of society has certainly played a role in popularizing poker.

The more people brought to the table, the better it is for the gaming environment as a whole. Cooperative game theory operates on the basis that having a larger player pool results in the overall gaming environment being able to be maintained longer, which is something every player can agree is a good thing. Therefore, the more exposure poker has in the main stream of society, the happier we should be as players.

Conflict Between Reason and Custom in Shakespeare’s Hamlet, Part One Sunday, Jan 25 2009

The presence of the ghost in Shakespeare’s Hamlet serves as a manifestation of ingrained custom in Denmark. As such, the Ghost, Hamlet’s father, is a contrast to Hamlet the son, the man of reason, who is the essence of modernity. The Ghost endeavors to reconnect Hamlet to the social codes of conduct that Hamlet has disregarded in the name of reason. The primary code of conduct that has been neglected is revenge for the Ghost’s murder, which it is Hamlet’s expected duty to undertake. The conflict between the custom of revenge and the reason of the modern world manifests itself in how Hamlet alternates between sanity (reason) and madness (adherence to custom).

The manner of how the Ghost appears in the living world is very significant. The first three sightings occur on the platform of the castle, where the sentinels keep watch. The Ghost wears “the very armour he had on/When he th’ ambitious Norway combated” (Ham. 1.1.63-64). This emphasizes the perception of the Ghost King as a warrior; above all else, a man of action, of tradition.

Hamlet is the opposite of his father; he is a product of modern thought, a scholar recently returned from Wittenberg. By his own acknowledgment, Hamlet is not a warrior, a man of action. When speaking of his uncle, Hamlet says he is “no more like my father/Than I to Hercules” (Ham. 1.2.152-153).

The purpose of the Ghost’s visitation to Hamlet is to call him to action, to avenge his father’s “foul and most unnatural murder” (Ham. 1.5.25). That Hamlet is well aware of his duty in this custom is signified by his reply:

Haste me to know’t, that I with wings as swift
As meditation or the thoughts of love
May sweep to my revenge (Ham. 1.5.29-31).

If Hamlet represents modernity and the Ghost represents tradition, then it is also true that modernity represents reason and tradition, madness. This is the concern that Horatio utters when Hamlet wants to follow the Ghost away. He warns Hamlet that the Ghost might “deprive your sovereignty of reason/And draw you into madness” (Ham.1.5.73-74). Thus, does Horatio link the Ghost, which represents custom, with madness.

That Hamlet also likens madness to the adherence of custom can be discerned from his putting on of an “antic disposition” (Ham.1.5.180), i.e. separating himself from his usual state of reason. In Shakespeare’s version, Hamlet’s feigned madness has a different purpose than the earlier version of Hamlet. In the earlier play, Hamlet feigns madness to disarm suspicion; in Shakespeare’s play, the “effect of the madness is not to lull but to arouse the king’s suspicion” (Eliot 44). Why does Hamlet’s madness cause this suspicion? Obviously, Claudius was not afraid of what Hamlet might do when he appeared rational and reasonable. The conclusion is that Claudius becomes afraid when Hamlet is irrational because Hamlet is leaving his reason behind and becoming more like a man of custom. And as a man of custom, Hamlet would be duty-bound to avenge the murder of his father.

Throughout the play, there are many instances where Hamlet switches back and forth from being a man of reason and a man of custom. When the Ghost admonishes Hamlet to “remember” him, Hamlet replies:

Ay, thou poor ghost, whiles memory holds a seat
In this distracted globe. Remember thee?
Yea, from the table of my memory
I’ll wipe away all trivial fond records,
All saws of books, all forms, all pressures past
That youth and observation copied there,
And thy commandment all alone shall live
Within the book and volume of my brain,
Unmix’d with baser matter. Yes, by heaven! (Ham. 1.5.96-104)

Although Hamlet swears to the Ghost not to think of anything else except his “commandment”, this is impossible for Hamlet to do. Hamlet realizes that “enterprises of great pitch and moment” become “sicklied o’er with the pale cast of thought” (Ham.3.1.85-86). His reason keeps intruding upon his will to carry out the revenge.

Hamlet’s delay in carrying out the Ghost’s commandment leads him to ponder whether he is without honor, a “rogue and peasant slave” in not conforming to the conduct of what is expected of a noble gentleman. Then Hamlet rationalizes his delay in action by questioning the Ghost’s veracity; he says the spirit he has seen could have been a devil and that the devil “hath power” to “assume a pleasing shape” (Ham.2.2.595-596). Therefore, Hamlet logically decides to obtain proof of his uncle’s guilt in the murder with the staging of the play before he acts to carry out the revenge.

Up The Creek: Pontoon Boats for Fisherman Sunday, Jan 25 2009

After 7 years of fishing from my float tube and having suffered a serious back injury, I had to look at other options, as fishing from my tube was an impossible task. A friend of mine suggested I come out and try his pontoon boat, after 20 minutes I realized this was something I had to have. After 2 months of looking around at all types and styles of pontoon boats I finally bought one. There are generally four different types of pontoon boats available and each pontoon boat has its advantages and disadvantages, before running out to your favorite fishing store and getting the first pontoon boat you see you will need to give some thought to exactly what type of fly fishing you will be doing and what type of water you will be using it on. Another good thing to consider is how far from your vehicle you have to haul your pontoon boat before you can set it into the water, as some of them can be quite heavy. Most pontoon boats today are available in a powder coated steel or aluminum frame, with the aluminum frame being the most popular due to its weight.

One Person Pontoon Boat - The options that are available on this style of boat are almost endless and they have a weight capacity of between 250 and 400 pounds (including your body weight and all your gear), I would tend to stay away from the lower weight capacity boats as you become limited to the amount you can carry. The optional motor mount is a must have and I would also recommend the aluminum frame (6 to 10 pounds lighter than the steel frame models), if the lakes and rivers you fish require you to carry the boat over a long distance. The higher end boats also have an option for a standing platform for easier casting and are available in steel or aluminum frames. Setting up this style of boat is a simple task and can be done in less than 15 minutes. The biggest advantage is this boats ability to float in less than 5 inches of water.

2 Person Pontoon Boat - Designed to carry 2 fishermen, this type of pontoon boat can be a real chore to assemble, also due to the size and weight you don’t want to haul this boat very far from your vehicle in order to set it on the water. The options on a 2-man boat are numerous; dual casting platforms, aluminum frame, motor mount (front and back), and the different array of storage compartments is almost unbelievable. The biggest disadvantage to this style of boat is the size, weight and amount of space required to haul it.

The Packable Pontoon Boat - This style of pontoon boat is an excellent choice if you like to get away from the crowds and walk into a more secluded lake, setting one of these boats up is about as easy as it can get. This style of boat because of its lightweight feature is not available with as many options as the standard single person boat. The single biggest advantage to this boat is its weight and the ability to pack it into your favorite spot. The biggest disadvantage is the lack of available options.

Kick Boat - A kick boat although not much of an upgrade from a float tube, will keep you warmer as only your legs are in the water, making it more pleasant to fish late into the fall season. The advantages of a kick boat are that they are lightweight, packable and will fit into the trunk of smaller vehicles. The disadvantage is that they can be extremely physically tiring to fin around the lake for a full day of fishing.

I have recently upgraded from my float tube into a Trout Unlimited pontoon boat, and after fishing from a pontoon boat I am sure I will never go back to a float tube again. As you sit above the water, fishing late into the season is not a problem due to cold water, casting is also much easier and moving around the lake is less tiring. My boat also has the optional motor mount and battery tray (picked up an electric motor for it on Saturday). I am looking forward to trying this out as soon as the ice is off the water.

Good luck and tight lines.

Take Advantage of the Exploding Popularity of Distance Learning Colleges Friday, Jan 23 2009

Distance learning colleges are popping up all over the world. One of the most well-known, University of Phoenix, started in 1976 with 8 students. Currently, its academic enrollment numbers more than 200,000 students located all over the world, making it the largest private, accredited university of the distance learning colleges.

In fact, it’s the largest private accredited university in the United States, period. Over 100,000 of those students are enrolled strictly in the online distance learning programs.

Distance learning colleges are flourishing for a number of reasons. There is our fast changing economy. People need to stay up to date on their skills, or constantly acquire new one’s so that they can advance in their career and stay valuable to their employer, without becoming obsolete.

There are also many people who feel education is a lifelong pursuit and not something that stops once you graduate from college. Both of these lead into one of the biggest reasons for the popularity of distance learning education and that is convenience.

We all lead very hectic lives and the one thing we always seem to be short of is time. Distance learning colleges eliminate the time aspect of education as much as it can be eliminated.

Continuing your education through distance learning eliminates a lot of the hassles of night school. You don’t have to work all day and then drive to class, spend three hours of your evening, drive home, and then study. You can just log on to your computer when you get home instead. This is a much less stressful way to pursue a degree.

Another advantage is not going through the hassle and stress of finding the right classes, in the right order, that are available at a time that is at least somewhat convenient for you.

What happens when a class you need is only available Tuesday evenings from 6 - 9 and that’s the one night of the week that you travel for your job. You’re out of luck. But attending college or graduate school through distance learning gets rid of that obstacle. You can get an online degree instead.

Another big obstacle in the way of getting an education is money. There aren’t many of us that can quit work to go back to school full time. With a distance learning program you can get an online degree without giving up your current job. This makes it a heck of a lot easier to pursue your degree when you can keep your current income while you go to school.

The virtual classroom that is available in most distance learning colleges offers other advantages compared with typical academic settings, and that’s 24-hour access to programs, faculty, and the other students, as well.

With the large number of distance learning colleges you can choose from today, you can find a degree or certification, or continuing education courses, in almost any subject, from journalism, to an MBA, to a PhD, Law degree, accounting, bachelor’s, engineering, culinary school, investing, real estate, paralegal, medical billing and more.

Have a look around at all the information on distance learning colleges so you can decide what distance learning model is best for your life, goals, and situation.

Pro Bass Fishing: An Inside View Friday, Jan 23 2009

Fishing is much known as a profession or a form of occupation. People do catches fishes and other aqua marine products to have something to eat and to have something for their living.

They spend money for fishing for they can earn from this. They spend for equipments and gears. They spend for improvements of their fishing for the make this as a business.

For some people, especially those outgoing and adventurous, fishing is a matter of sport and game. They do fishing for their enjoyment and relaxation. They entertain their selves through fishing because they can get peace of mind and calmness in the said activity.

Bass fly fishing is a type of fishing that involves using an artificial fly. It is different from traditional fishing methods in that fly anglers cast a hook that generally has bits of feather, fur, foam, yarn, or other similar material attached using thread to form what is referred to as a ‘fly’, as opposed to using worms or other bait.

Pro bass fishing is just like the ordinary fly fishing that we know. The only difference is that it entails the presence of professionals in fishing. These professionals are those that are well respected in the line of fishing. They were considered professionals because of their dedication and love in fishing including their contributions.

There are the types of fly fishing. The best known and the most classic is he dry fly fishing. The fisherman uses an artificial fly, which he casts so that it will float on the water. The fly will pass over the fish, which will hopefully rise up and bite it. The fisherman then tries to control the fish’s attempts to escape, tiring it enough to bring it in to be retrieved from the water with a landing net.

Many anglers prefer this type of fly fishing because everything can be seen - the angler casts at a fish he can see, the fly is easily visible on the surface of the water, and he can see the fish take the fly. The only drawback to this is that trout and other fish tend to feed underwater, and therefore are not as likely to come up to take a dry fly.

The second form of fly fishing is what is known as nymph fishing. When the flies lay eggs in the river or lake, the eggs hatch out as nymphs, make their way to the surface and they hatch into a fly. Therefore, nymph fishing utilizes imitations of different nymphs that are weighted to stay below the surface of the water. This type of fishing is often considered more challenging, as all the action takes place beneath the surface.

Bass fly fishing has become an increasingly popular sport, and most anglers will agree that it’s not just about catching fish. Some anglers would even regard fly fishing as a kind of religion, and most consider it a relaxing pastime that can be enjoyed by people from all walks of life. It also appeals to the more environmentally conscious, as it is less harmful to the fish than many other techniques, and most anglers return their catch.

Pro bass fly fishing requires gears and equipments that will aide the fisher to a more productive and fruitful fishing. There are gears that are widely used and there are also some that especially used by pro bass fishers.

The rod is the fisherman’s most important piece of equipment, and should be chosen with care. For beginners, a basic rod-and-reel set is enough; the features and materials aren’t necessarily important. It is more important that the beginning fisherman learn how to use the rod, and become comfortable with it before moving on to more complex pieces of equipment.

Pro bass fishing gives not only relaxation and much of enjoyment, but it also give way to amateur fishers to prove something into their selves that they have the talents in fishing because of the challenges being offered by the sport.

The fishing sport not just offer things fishing, it also provides things that are in with nature. In fishing, the enthusiast used to learn how to love the environment because of the settings and locations of the activities which are always beyond the beauty of the nature.

Pro bass fishing not only entertains, it also provides a whole new world of adventures.
