Where to Start

Most people start the process of getting a degree by checking out schools in their area that offer degrees in the programs in which they are interested. It is also possible to begin “at the end” by looking at job opportunities with a degree from a particular school. Check out the job market for computer information systems graduates in your area. One of the most important decisions you will have to make in selecting a school is choosing between a “major league” university or a more affordable community college, technical school, or online university. Most of these schools offer job placement services. Talk to them and see what companies are hiring their graduates. Talk to the human resource department’s of the major Information Technology employers in your area. Ask them if it makes a difference from where you get your degree. Check with friends and relatives and see if they know anyone working in the field and talk to them. Check the online job search sites like Monster and Career Builder. The job requirement sections in a job listing can give you clues as to how companies view degrees in this field. They will tell you if associates degrees are acceptable and if degrees from major universities are preferred.

Major Universities

The Philadelphia area is blessed to have two nationally recognized universities that offer degrees in Computer Information Systems: Temple University and the University of Pennsylvania. The College of Technology at Temple offers Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of science, as well as a Master’s of Science in Computer and Information Science. The School of Engineering and Applied Science at the University of Pennsylvania offers bachelors, masters, and doctorate degrees. Community Colleges and Technical Schools

The Community College of Philadelphia offers Associate Degrees through their Department Of Computer Information Systems. Their approach is more “hands-on” and pragmatic, aiming towards jobs in computer technology fields. You can get an associate’s degree in as little as 18 months and the cost savings over a four year degree are substantial. If you begin your search by examining the job market you can get an idea what kinds of jobs are available for those with Associates Degrees. They offer bachelor’s degrees in Computer Information Systems and have an accelerated option that allows you to complete your degree in three years. They also offer certain courses online and provide a full range of evening and weekend classes to help working students.

Online Universities

Although some employers are skeptical about online universities they are playing an increasing role in offering educational opportunities. One of the most recognized online school is The University of Phoenix.
